Monday night in San Francisco at The Great American Music Hall. How rockin’ could it be? You’d be surprised. This particular Monday boasted Corrosion Of Conformity, Whores and Crobot. And the house was PACKED!! It may have been sold out but I’m not certain of that.

Having just got off a 9 week tour (8 with Death Angel and 1 with Nefarious) I was a tad burnt on live music but I’m glad I was able to get one show in before I head back out.

Opening the show were Crobot from Pennsylvania. I was familiar with the name but had never saw or heard them. These dudes were absolutely not what I was expecting. Going off the name I was expecting something more mechanical and harsh. Maybe even a little mathy.

Crobot were as organic and good time Rock n’ Rolly as it gets. The singer had charisma to spare channeling his inner Steven Tyler meets Ian Ashbury with…let’s say…maybe a little Charles Manson? He really had some Manson moves. Like the ones Manson busted on the Geraldo special. Look it up. 

With songs like “Me And Your Mother” it was hard not to crack a smile and get into the groove. The highlight of their set was when the lead vocalist leapt up onto the guitarist's shoulders. This guitarist wasn’t short either. It was borderline superhuman. Great set.

Up next were noisters Whores. I saw these guys a long time ago at Slims and remember thinking they should be on tour with Unsane. Ok, I gotta give you some background before I continue with this review. I was in a band with Chris Spencer from Unsane called the Cutthroats 9. Our heyday was the early to mid 00’s. We toured a shit ton and most of the bands we played with were in the “Noise Rock” and “Noise Math” genres.

After like 3 years of hearing all that stuff I realized I don’t really like these bands all that much. Don’t get me wrong, there were some absolute KILLER bands out there like Keelhaul, Today Is The Day and The Heroin Sheiks. But after touring that circuit for 3 years straight I was burnt on it. I wanted to play with Metal bands again. 

When I saw Whores at Slims way back when I was probably still in my anti-Noise Rock faze. I wasn’t in the right frame of mind. Since then I’ve re-embraced a lot of those bands from the early 00’s. 

Seeing Whores this time around was an entirely different experience. They kicked my ass plain and simple. And I still think they’d be great on an Unsane tour. Whores had killer energy with the staple Jesus Lizard gut churning bass tone. My favorite parts of their set were the guitarist’s quirky yet infectious and punishing riffs. Even the stuff I found annoying at first, like this guitar loop thing he did on one song turned out to be the best song of the set. They were fucking great and I thank them for reminding me that Noise Rock ain’t all that bad after all.

Lastly we had my buddy Pepper and Corrosion Of Conformity. I saw them last year opening for Judas Priest at The Shoreline and they were great. Since then they have a new drummer who, with all due respect, was infinitely better than the last guy. I noticed right away the songs had more of an OOMPH to them. After the show, the drummer told me he got the COC gig through a referral to Pepper from none other than Anthrax’s Charlie Benante. That’s pretty high praise. 

The set was chock full of tracks from their new album Good God/Baad Man and lots of classics from their golden era (Wiseblood, Deliverance etc.) and sounded as good as ever. Although I was pretty shocked they didn’t play “King Of The Rotten”. You could tell they were having a blast up there and seemed taken aback that it was actually a Monday night.

It was great to say hi to Pepper before and after the set. He’s such an awesome dude. Him and I hit it off on the Mega Cruise. On the last night of the cruise people dressed up in costumes. I wore my Eddie mask (Piece Of Mind) and a Niners poncho I bought in Mexico the day earlier.

I got on the elevator and there’s Pepper feeling pretty good. He took one look at me and said “Man, I don’t know what’s scarier, that Eddie mask or that Niners poncho”. He was the life of the party at the karaoke room. To the point where he had to be removed by security but that’s another story for another time. I love the guy.

Pretty kick ass Monday night if I don’t say so myself.
