Sunday afternoon free metal show at the Kilowatt, what could be better?
Due to a birthday lunch I was late to this show, and I missed the two openers. I heard that Eaten by Insects was particularly great, I guess this was one of their first few shows.
I did manage to catch the last couple songs of Viscelator, who I’ve seen multiple times and always enjoy. Frontman Justin had some technical difficulties with his guitar during the last song, but just grabbed the mike with both hands and went all aggro death metal vocalist. That was pretty good actually.
I picked up a bottle of Viscelator hot sauce after the show, not sure what the trend is there with so many bands now having their own hot sauce, but I’m here for it. Gonna build a metal hot sauce collection for the record label office maybe.
In the support slot was Post Human X, a SF Bay Area Deathcore band. Two guys playing 8 string guitars (!), a drummer and a singer. The singer Ivan, also of the death metal band Wroht, is a pretty great frontman, so I got pretty into their set, bought the CD afterwards.
Deathcore and metalcore really aren’t my thing, and with all the samples it kind of reminded me of the industrial metal trend of the early 90s. But it really isn’t anything like that (except for the clicky bass drum triggers). In general I could do without pre-recorded intros and backing samples, but those seem a requirement of this subgenre. Regardless, Post Human X was heavy and tight, always a good thing, kind of reminded me of Meshuggah. But again not a style of metal where I have much of a clue.
The headliner Bone Crown was a four-piece hailing from the central valley of California. Another Deathcore band, they were pretty good live. Tons of samples, even some funky beats, but very staccato guitars and hardcore style vocals. Even though I grew up on hardcore punk, I have a hard time with deathcore, but these guys were worth seeing. I stayed for their entire set.
One funny thing that happened during the show was that we were behind schedule in giving away the SanFran666co pair of tickets for the DNA metal show happening later that evening. Usually we pick someone randomly the day before, but I forgot and Will was texting me during the show about it, so we could update the list for that night.
We picked someone and I’m typing out an email during Bone Crown’s set (sorry), letting them know that they won a pair of tickets to the show later that evening. Turns out the guy I sent the email to was sitting one bar stool away from me. When a friend introduced us, we had a good laugh. The metal scene is a small family, and I should stay off my phone during shows.
All in all it was a good early afternoon metal show, and I managed to preserve some energy (and save some beer drinking) for the evening DNA show later that evening. More on that next post!
