Lost Goat isn’t a metal band, more of a hard rock band. But given how important they were in San Francisco's Mission District 90s punk and metal scene, their first show in 25 years is worthy of a writeup here for sure.
Singer / bass player Erica Stoltz also fronts another heavy trio, the NY-based metal band Sanhedrin, but that is now, this was then. Both Sanhedrin and Lost Goat are regularly part of my playlist.
This was actually Lost Goat’s second show reunited, as they started a 5 show California tour the previous night in Petaluma, CA. But this was their hometown show, and fittingly they played in a warehouse just like they used to do back in the day.
The New Farm is a community space on Port of SF land down by the Bay, both an outdoor art space with stage and the aforementioned warehouse, which was formerly the Pound metal club during the early 2000s. It is free and completely volunteer run, a very cool space that not unlike the warehouses of the 90s hosts events and takes donations to make rent.
The opener Green Straw was new to me. A 3 piece rock band with some punk influences, they started out slow and kinda low energy, the singer guitarist sitting on a stool (I’m used to Thrash, don’t forget). But they got going more during their set, I drank a 4th beer, and they were pretty good.
Drunk Horse was up second, another late 90s band that has been playing some shows recently, but I hadn’t seen them in forever. They sounded great, I’ve always been a fan of their brand of fast hard rock, interwoven guitars, a classic rock sound sped up for Gen X.
According to my calendar I last saw them play in 2011, but their heyday (especially gigs with Lost Goat) was 1999-2000 in clubs like the CW Saloon (RIP) and Mission Records (RIP). I’d seen Drunk Horse’s name on flyers a few times recently, but given that they aren’t on metal bills, I hadn't managed to see their newest reunion until now. If you see any Drunk Horse CDs, especially this great one below, be sure to pick them up.
Lost Goat of course, was the band a lot of old rockers (and some younger ones too) had come out to see. They played an amazing set of classic tracks, with Erica’s powerful vocals, Eric’s unique guitar sound, and Tina’s thundering drums as familiar as if it were 1999 again. It was an amazing set, truly.
The reason for their mini-tour reunion was the reissue of their third album from 2002, The Dirty Ones, on vinyl for the first time. That album is definitely worth picking up.
One of the cool things about the show was that they had also dug out their old albums from a practice space somewhere, so they had their first and second albums, Trapped on Earth and Equator, for sale at the show as well. I didn’t have Trapped on Earth on vinyl, so I was excited to score that.
Lost Goat delivered an intense set, and even played a new song (!), so perhaps there is a chance this reunion will continue and there will be new recordings? One can always hope.
All in all it was an amazing evening in the old Pound / New Farm, with some real blasts from the past and hope for a heavy rock future.
