Bis dahin besuchte ich ab und an die größeren Hallen in San Francisco mit bekannten Namen und dementsprechend vielen Zuschauern, doch nun wollte ich die lokale Szene mit ihren kleinen Bands und Bühnen in der Stadt und der Umgebung entdecken. Ich kannte niemanden. Ich war mit den Bands nicht vertraut. Ich hörte mir nur ein paar Lieder auf Bandcamp an, kaufte eine Karte und ging los.

Die „Bay Area“, wie die Umgebung um San Francisco und Oakland genannt wird, und die von Santa Rosa im Norden bis San Jose im Süden, als auch Livermore oder Brentwood im Osten reicht, war in den Achtzigern ein Mekka des Thrash Metal. Den größten Einfluss hatten Exodus, Testament und Death Angel. Als Schüler malten wir ihre Logos auf Schultaschen und Aktenordner. Metallica wurde zwar in Los Angeles gegründet, zog aber bald nach El Cerrito, das nördlich von Oakland liegt. In diesen Jahren florierte die Metal-Szene hier. Man tauschte Musik untereinander aus, schrieb für Fanzines, ging auf Konzerte und half sich gegenseitig. Wer mehr über diese Zeit erfahren möchte, sollte sich die hervorragende Dokumentation „Murder in the Front Row“ ansehen.

Es dauerte nicht lange, und ich wurde auf Konzerten erkannt. Das Publikum ist sich erstaunlich treu. Man sieht die gleichen Leute, die entweder vorne an der Bühne ihre Köpfe schütteln, im Moshpit kreisen, oder im Hinterbereich ihren Spaß haben. Sobald ich ein Gespräch mit jemandem begann, wurde ich freundlich aufgenommen. Jeden Abend wurden mir alte und neue Bands aus der Umgebung empfohlen, die ich bis dahin nicht kannte. Als mir jemand von The List erzählte, wurde mir erst bewusst, wie umfangreich und vielfältig die lokale Szene ist.

Tim, der Bassist von Sleepbomb, bestätigte meine Erfahrungen über ein Glas Bier in der Kneipe Toronado: jede und jeder ist willkommen, so wie er oder sie ist. Niemand wird dich fragen, ob du drei Songs des Headliners aufzählen kannst, und dich danach beurteilen. Komm' wie du willst. Ob in der Kutte oder im Hawai'i-Shirt.

In den Bands und im Publikum treffen sich alt und jung, jeden Geschlechts und aus allen Bevölkerungsgruppen der Bay Area. Fast jeden Abend kann ich ein Metal- oder Punk-Konzert finden, das meine Musikrichtung spielt, oder Neues kennenlernen.

In den letzten Monaten sah ich lokale Bands wie Ancient Räge, Dungeon Crawl, Frolic, Heathen, Hell Fire und Trencher, die Thrash- oder Speed-Metal spielen. Barbarous, Crepuscle, Dispirit, Funeral Chant, Hellhunter, Laceration, Molten, Necrot, Vastum, Vile Rites oder Vorlust sind bekannt für Death oder Black Metal, während Sleepbomb und Snakemother mehr Doom Metal, Gravedodger, Sönus und Stone Gnome mehr Psychedelic oder Stoner Rock spielen. Die Einstufungen sind allerdings fließend.

Für Grind oder Gore kann ich Cartilage und Deathgrave sehr empfehlen. Das Fantasy Metal Genre ist mit Wartroll repräsentiert. Die lokalen Größen wie Exodus, Testament und Death Angel dürfen nicht fehlen! Die Liste wächst ständig. Ich selbst war letztes Jahr auf über fünfzig Konzerten. Einige Bands sind seit Jahren bekannt und waren schon in Europa auf Tour. Viele wurden erst vor kurzem gegründet. Bands kommen und gehen, aber die Vielfalt bleibt bestehen.

Die kleineren Clubs in San Francisco, die häufig Metal-Shows anbieten, sind die DNA Lounge, das Bottom of the Hill, das Knockout und das Neck of the Woods. In Oakland sind der Thee Stork Club und der Eli's Mile High Club bequem mit dem Zug oder Bus zu erreichen. Das Cornerstone ist mitten in Berkeley, der Ivy Room oder das 924 Gilman nur einen Kilometer von der nächsten Bahnstation entfernt. Auf Instagram oder Anzeigen, die in Musikgeschäften aushängen, erfährt man von den „Geheimtipps“. Konzerte im Hinterhof eines Hauses oder eines Imbisses in West Oakland, ein chinesisches Restaurant im Tenderloin, eine Lichtung im Park oder auch ein Flecken Brachland im Osten von San Francisco. „Ask the band, ask a punk“.
