Hey boys and girls and undecided. This is Will Carroll and welcome to another edition of Bleeding Priest’s Bay Area Metal Spotlight.

Today I am covering one of my favorite bands to emerge from our wretched scene in the last few years, Vorlust with their debut full-length album, Lick the Flesh. Great stuff. Killer, nasty, dirty death metal.

The guitarist is Sonny, who is also in Necrot. These bands do not sound anything alike, which is really impressive. The fact that he can be in two simultaneous death metal bands from Oakland and compartmentalize riffs for each band is wild. I do not know how he does it. I would not be able to do it.

That was the glory and the beauty of Old Grandad. That band would just take any riff and turn it into a song. If I had riffs for other bands I was jamming with and they did not work for them, I would just give it to Old Grandad. Next thing you know, we have a song called Fear.

But back to Vorlust. They do not sound anything like Necrot. I love both bands. Necrot is more in-your-face, chainsaw-to-the-rectum death metal. No fucking around. Vorlust has more mystery and atmosphere to their style. I think Vorlust would poison you and then burn you alive. That is their vibe.

There is definitely a bit of a Venom influence. Maybe just a little more loose, more rocking, raw sound. There is really no comparison between Necrot and Vorlust, but I love them both equally for different reasons. This is a fantastic debut album.

The first time I saw them was maybe two years ago when they played the Killowatt with my band Hellhunter. The lead vocalist and bassist, Cunnus, is fantastic. She is a great front person. Her death metal growl is fucking killer. As good as any dudes around. She really rocks it out.

I think she is just the vocalist now and they have a separate bass player, but I am not totally sure. They have been around since about 2019 and have put out a few demos and singles, maybe a split. I am anxiously awaiting their follow-up full-length to this record, and I would love for Hectic Records / Bleeding Priest to put that out on vinyl if they would be so inclined. I am putting the feelers out there.

Fun fact. Cunnus used to be a server at Front Porch in the Upper Mission. Best fried chicken in San Francisco. I just gave you a plug, so hook me up next time I am there.

Bottom line, this is kickass, raw, street-level death metal. Really dirty. I fucking dig it. Check out Lick the Flesh. Catch Vorlust live if they are playing any shows. You will not be disappointed. High energy. Good time.
